Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
Opportunities for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (I&E) on the campus are many. Mtech seeks to expand its reach by engaging every student, especially engineers, with a passion for innovation, by working with companies throughout Maryland that could benefit by connecting with USM faculty, by enhancing opportunities for innovators from underrepresented populations in an inclusive and welcoming environment.
The Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute, A. James Clark School of Engineering, University of Maryland, is seeking an I&E Proposal Writer and Coordinator. The person in this position will work with the Mtech Director and Mtech leadership to maintain its excellence in the I&E space and launch new initiatives that ultimately serve University of Maryland students and the economic vitality of the State of Maryland. The successful candidate will:
The Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute, A. James Clark School of Engineering, University of Maryland, is seeking an I&E Proposal Writer and Coordinator. The person in this position will work with the Mtech Director and Mtech leadership to maintain its excellence in the I&E space and launch new initiatives that ultimately serve University of Maryland students and the economic vitality of the State of Maryland. The successful candidate will:
- Participate in formulating and executing new programs, including securing external funds in support of program initiatives
- Work with Mtech directors to engage professional and tenure-track faculty in Mtech activities.
- Assist Mtech directors and engineering faculty in I&E proposal development, coordinating faculty participation/meetings, and drafting program policies and procedures through to execution.
- Assist in developing faculty incentives that stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship participation. These might include helping to establish “vertical” areas of emphasis that align with campus and state initiatives. They might involve student fellowships and seed grants.
- Help to establish a startup venture’s progression from innovative idea & market placement to product realization and commercialization all while immersed within the I&E ecosystem to include ICorps, incubation in the Rabin building, and “graduation” to the Discovery District, all while gaining assistance in business development, IP positioning, and in securing investment.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 3 years of experience in high-level administrative and coordination experience working at university, federal/state agencies, and industry, with a specific focus on engineering technology and policy.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Demonstrated strong analytical, research, critical thinking, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Outstanding interpersonal communication skills. Able to communicate verbally and in writing effectively with all constituents within a highly diverse university environment.
- Strong ability to work both independently and as a team member

- The Maryland Industrial Partnerships (MIPS) program has for 30+ years catalyzed economic development within Maryland by linking faculty with companies to solve technological challenges, open new business opportunities, and create new jobs. MIPS has a state wide reach and represents all USM institutions.
- The National Science Foundation MidAtlantic Hub of the renowned ICorps program is led by the University of Maryland and is a key Mtech program. A Maryland focused ICorps program is working with several of Maryland’s HBCUs to port innovation and venture creation activities that broaden the ICorps reach, catalyzing activity throughout the state of Maryland.
- Mtech’s Learning and Development program reaches thousands of students annually through on line Masters programs such as its Master of Professional Studies in Technology Entrepreneurship and Corporate Innovation Program, Master of Professional Studies in Product Management, and Minor in Technology Entrepreneurship and Corporate Innovation programs.
- MTech is also home to Mtech Ventures, a vibrant incubator housed in the Herbert Rabin Technology Advancement Building, a place for venture nucleation. Many successful spinouts have emerged from the Ventures program.
- The student operated Startup Shell has for nearly a decade, been a focal point for student led innovation. Successes are many, including firms that have subsequently attracted investment by accelerators such as Y-Combinator.
- The brand new EA Fernandez IDEA Factory, a campus wide signature facility opening this fall, will be a focal point for student led initiatives as well as innovations in technological verticals of robotics, rotorcraft, and quantum. The student focused activities, including the new home of the Startup Shell, are beneficiaries of the tremendous support of Tom and Susan Scholl by the creation of the Tom and Susan School Center for Student Innovation.
