Position Purpose

According to the overall needs of the Organization and under the direction of the MPOWER Program Manager, the MPOWER Mental Health Therapist will conduct client intakes and mental health assessments, individual counseling sessions with enrolled intervention clients, provide client referrals as needed, maintain confidential client records, lead outreach workers in planning and conducting follow-ups, and co-facilitate group sessions for the Manifesting Positive Outcomes through Wellness Education and Recovery Program (MPOWER). MPOWER is TPAN’s newest program for African American individuals and is funded through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). MPOWER facilitates groups specific to the program’s populations of focus, which include African American same gender loving men ages 25-45 and African American women who have sex with men, ages 18-40. The Program Manager will lead the facilitation of the behavioral health intervention (HHRP and CHAT) groups for men and women, conduct client surveys, provide appropriate community referrals, review client-screening results, and provide supervision of program staff. Eligible clients engage in group level discussions and program activities related to the importance of health and wellness-related topics such as communication and relationships, substance use, spirituality, dealing with stress, mental health and HIV. Those who are enrolled and active in the program will attend an overnight health retreat at a local hotel.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct mental health assessments and client intakes.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments and referral sessions for HIV, viral hepatitis, and STI-related risk including the risk of substance misuse, unstable housing, depression and anxiety, and problems in school or at home.
  • Support program participants with personal and interpersonal communication skills including, but not limited to, conflict resolution.
  • Assist Group Facilitators with implementation and facilitation of group interventions.
  • Co-facilitate group sessions (HHRP and CHAT interventions).
  • Attend community meetings, events, forums, and agency special events and programs (i.e., workshops, festivals, health fairs, etc.).
  • Maintain required records, files, and forms in an organized manner and in accordance with State, Local, and Federal Guidelines.
  • Participate in staff meetings and complete necessary trainings as determined by the MPOWER Program Manager and/or grantors.
  • Assist with HIV and HCV testing and test counseling as needed.
  • Other related duties as assigned by the MPOWER Program Manager.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree with clinical and administrative experience in Social Work, Psychology, or Public Health with related experience in substance abuse counseling or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possess a Professional License, LPC, LSW (LSW or LCSW; LPC or LCPC) or Professional Certification in substance abuse counseling, CADC.
  • Minimum of 2 years mental health counseling.
  • Minimum of 2 years working in the field of HIV/AIDS.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Regular and predictable attendance are required and must be able to work extended hours, including weekends, early mornings, evenings, and holidays according to the demands of the role.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence in working people of color and the LGBTQ community as well as experience and knowledge working with those living with and affected by HIV/AIDS.
  • Understanding of HIV/AIDS, STD, TB, Drug, and Alcohol prevention related psychosocial issues.
  • Excellent people skills and an upbeat and enthusiastic attitude.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with accountability; exercise sound judgment and discretion.
  • Strong critical thinking and reasoning skills.
  • Working knowledge of Spanish language (bilingual) is a plus.

Salary

Starting at $50,000.00/annually (Depending on Experience)
