The Centre for English Language Communication (CELC) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) prepares its undergraduate and postgraduate students for higher education and the workplace by equipping them with academic communication, professional communication, and other 21st century skills. CELC offers courses that range from basic academic literacy courses to academic writing, critical thinking, and professional communication courses. It also runs undergraduate writing programmes (e.g., Ideas & Exposition) that adopt the ‘content and language integrated learning’ (CLIL) approach. CELC therefore plays a significant role in fulfilling NUS’ mission “to educate, inspire and transform”.
CELC invites applications for the following full-time non-tenure educator track teaching positions.
Position of Lecturer
Applicants for the position of lecturer must meet the first two of the following selection criteria:
A master’s or doctoral degree in the field of English language, linguistics, applied linguistics, rhetoric and composition, communication studies, science communication, or a related field or A master’s or doctoral degree in a non-language related academic field, e.g., the humanities, social sciences, business, or STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), with experience or evidence of expertise in teaching academic writing or professional communication.
- The equivalent of two years of full-time experience teaching in higher education.
- The following qualities will be viewed favourably:
- Experience in course design and material development for academic writing or professional communication courses.
- Experience in teaching beyond proficiency and EAP courses, such as courses in research writing for later year undergraduates, thesis writing for graduate students, and professional communication.
- Scholarly contributions, evidenced in publications and presentations, especially in the last three years.

- Tertiary academic qualifications and the year of award for each degree.
- Employment history (last five years).
- Courses or areas taught.
- Participation in course design and material development.
- Other achievements in teaching (e.g., teaching awards).
- Publications, conference presentations and other achievements in research.
- Service in ELT or education.
- Current and expected salaries (in SGD).
- Names and contact details of three (preferably academic) referees.
- A teaching statement detailing your teaching philosophy, approaches, reflections, and impacts (1,500 words).
- A research statement detailing your research areas, accomplishments, and plans (1,500 words).
- Student and peer evaluations of your teaching from the last three years.
Applications with missing items may not be processed.
Other Information
The starting salary will be commensurate with the applicant's qualifications and experience. Successful candidates will commence work in July or December.
Because of the sheer number of applications, CELC regrets that only shortlisted candidates will be notified. Candidates who applied in the last two years need not reapply unless there have been significant developments in their teaching qualifications or experience.
