POSITION TITLE: Senior Accountant


POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Accountant is responsible for the development of procedures, administration, and maintenance of one or a combination of accounting systems. Prepares financial statements, footnote disclosures, and journal entries, and reconciles complex general ledger accounts. Re-engineers processes and incorporates automation to maximize efficiency. Provides a high level of general support and analysis to the department.



RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Complex Accounting and Analysis

  • Performs complex accounting and analysis over high sensitivity and risks areas.
  • Prepares journal entries, reconciliations, and audit schedules; and researches and analyzes historical accounting data.
  • Maintains current working knowledge and reviews/monitors for adherence to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Prepares financial statements, footnote disclosures, and related support for annual financial statements.
  • Implements new accounting pronouncements (including writing technical memos) in a timely manner.
  • Performs the following (assesses, recommends, designs, implements, formally documents, maintains, and monitors) systems and processes to provide visibility, control, and compliance with company policy, government regulations, and to drive efficient and effective accounting operations.
  • Ensures accurate accounting practices for investments, expendable gifts, endowed funds, and planned giving.
  • Prepares reports on gift and endowment funding.
  • Prepares annual audit workpapers, financial statements, schedules, and footnotes related to investments and endowments.

    Support and Training

    • Serves as backup in providing accounting and systems guidance and training within Finance & Accounting and to external departments.
    • Performs special projects as assigned (e.g., budget projections support, analyses to support Management, systems implementation, etc.)
    • Details of established essential functions for this position will be addressed/discussed during the interview process.

      REQUIREMENTS:

      • Bachelor's degree in accounting/finance.
      • CPA license highly preferred.
      • Minimum five years progressively responsible and related professional level accounting experience, to include at least two years of public accounting.
      • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to select appropriate means of communication.
      • Ability to explain and concisely document complex accounting concepts and key processes and controls.
      • Experience reading and interpreting contracts, analyzing issues, defining problems, processing transactions in a timely and consistent manner, and adhering to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
      • Experience and/or ability to implement new pronouncements and writing technical memos.
      • A general understanding of processes and controls, including experience providing recommendations and implementing remediations.
      • Experience working with large ERP systems, to include journal entries, queries and reports preferred.
      • Self-starter with solid organizational skills and ability to effectively manage multiple priorities or re-prioritize projects.
      • Experience with investment/endowment accounting preferred.
      • This is an on-campus position requiring 4 days per week working onsite from our La Jolla campus, with flexibility to work 1 day per week remotely from home.

      COMPENSATON:

      The expected hiring range for this position is $85,000 to $112,412/annually, commensurate with experience.
