POSTDOC OPPORTUNITY: ANALYSIS OF PLANETARY MATERIALS

The Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences at Purdue University has an opening for a postdoctoral researcher to perform research on the space/surface weathering of planetary materials. Possible investigation topics include but are not limited to the space weathering of lunar and carbonaceous materials via solar wind irradiation and micrometeorite impacts, the valence state of transition metals in lunar and meteoritic materials as a result of space weathering and other alteration processes, and/or the weathering of Venus surface analogs under simulated atmospheric conditions. Experience in the microstructural and chemical analysis of geological samples is preferred, but expertise in materials science (ceramics) is also welcome. Experience with electron microscopy is important, and expertise in electron energy loss spectroscopy and other applied transmission electron microscopy techniques is preferred. The position is available immediately and is expected to run for 2 years pending availability of funding. A background check is required for employment in this position.
