Research Technologist

Job Description

  • The Department of Genetic Medicine is seeking a Research Technologist to carry out the daily tasks of a growing Core facility laboratory. This position will set up sequencing reactions, gene expression and genotyping assays, distribute oligonucleotides and other products to customers, interact with and assist customers using self-service qPCR equipment. This position will interact with students, technicians and primary investigators as needed, including troubleshooting customer samples and experiments. This position must be able to provide exceptional customer service and maintain meticulous work standards.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • With minimal supervision, follow protocols to carry out sequencing reactions, gene expression assays, genotyping assays, pyrosequencing, digital PCR and other experiments as necessary.
  • Set up sequencing reactions and run DNA Sequencer.
  • Set up gene expression/genotyping assays and run associated equipment. Follow QA/QC protocols and all laboratory safety protocols.
  • Responsible for daily maintenance of the equipment and proper use. Monitor laboratory supplies and order supplies when needed.
  • Operate the pyrosequencing and digital PCR instruments independently. Assess data and release to customers.
  • Contact, interact with, and assist customers as needed.
  • Troubleshoot customer experiments and provide assistance as needed. Keep track of self-service genotyping use and maintain iLab billing records. Ensure that client requests are entered properly into database.
  • Ensure that samples are properly labeled and match requests.
  • Receive oligonucleotide delivers and orders and update database as necessary.
  • Receive, log and track orders for delivery to our off-site locations. Deliver oligonucleotides and other products to customers as needed.
  • Answer phones when needed.
  • Willing to cross-train in human blood processing, cell culture and single cell genomic methods.
  • Monitor database.
  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.
  • Cross-train to other GRCF centers as needed.


Machines/Equipment Used

  • Experience with the following equipment helpful but will train as necessary.
  • Centrifuges, electrophoresis equipment, 3730XL DNA Analyzers, Real-Time PCR equipment (including the QuantStudio qPCR instruments), Digital PCR, PCR thermocycler, robotic and manual pipettors, common lab equipment (hotplate/stirrers, balances, spectrophotometer, etc.), Macintosh and IBM computers; 95% time.


Specific Physical Requirements

  • Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm, for example, using a keyboard.
  • Communication skills using the spoken word. Ability to see and hear within normal parameters. Ability to move about workspace.
  • Lift, carry, move supplies, computers, etc.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a Core facility setting.
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.

Role/Level/Range: ACRO40/E/02/CC  
Starting Salary Range: $15.70 - $26.25 HRLY ($43,680 targeted; Commensurate with experience) 
Employee group: Full Time 
Schedule: 8:30-5:00pm (some flex if needed)
