Hopkins invites applicants to apply for the position of Recreation Worker.


Johns Hopkins offers a robust recreation program that includes group fitness classes, personal training, outdoor experiential education, aquatic activities, sports clubs, and intramural sports. In a typical year, our programs and facilities receive approximately 250,000 visits from students, staff, and faculty. The Department of Recreation is the largest employer of students on campus and additionally provides robust student leadership development opportunities. In 2021, Hopkins Athletics and Recreation completed a 27-million-dollar renovation and expansion of the Ralph S. O’Connor Center for Recreation and Well-Being. Built as a cross-collaborative campus destination, the facility features all-new state-of-the-art equipment for strength and cardiovascular training, expanded group fitness offerings, and mindfulness and meditation programming. The focus is on fostering holistic student health, a community of care, and an increased emphasis on self-care and well-being.


The Recreation Worker sets up and maintains recreational equipment and facilities, informs patrons of rules and regulations, and answers routine questions. The incumbent issues sports equipment and towels to patrons, processes and maintains various paperwork and records, and runs errands as requested.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs event-related set-up & breakdown throughout the Ralph S. O’Connor Center for Recreation & Well-Being i.e., moving various tables and chairs, cleaning facilities, and inspecting facilities to ensure they are safe and will provide a pleasurable experience for all involved.
  • Operates various equipment related to maintaining Ralph S. O’Connor Center including but not limited to boom lift, large and small power tools, and attachments. Utilize scaffolding and ladders.
  • Uses hand and power-operated equipment such as but not limited to,
    • hand truck and dolly to move classroom and office furniture, gymnasium equipment, athletic supplies, chairs, tables, mats, netting, goals, cartons of athletic clothing, equipment, etc.
    • custodial cleaning equipment to perform custodial-related duties to clean, wax, and polish gymnasium floors, studio spaces, hallways, wrestling mats, swimming pool deck, etc.
    • power-operated scrubbing and polishing equipment, watering hose, mop, and cleaning rags.
    • flatbed truck to move various equipment as needed.
  • Empty and clean vacant lockers, bag and store unclaimed belongings, and change lock combinations.
  • Transports sets up equipment, and supplies such as but is not limited to gym equipment (i.e., volleyball, badminton, and pickleball nets and accessories), goals, etc.
  • Repairs modifies, and/or maintains all recreation equipment, including scrape, paint, and labeling equipment properly according to established procedures.
  • Responsible for picking up and sweeping walkways and other surfaces, emptying and cleaning waste receptacles, disposes of waste and debris.
  • Operate industrial washer and dryer, identify towel service patrons using designated software systems, and operate towel exchange service accordingly.
  • Lock/secure and unlock building areas as required to provide patrons proper access to facilities and correct and report obvious patron irregularities to the proper authority when observed.
  • Operate recreation equipment room, issue sports equipment to patrons, verify patron's identification prior to issuing sports equipment and maintain proper records of transactions, process/maintain associated paperwork such as lost equipment reports, locker service receipts, patron reservation sheets, etc.
  • Informs guests and assists with enforcement of facilities rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Operate University-owned or rented passenger vehicles to run errands, fill gas tanks, occasionally pick up and drop off department deliveries, etc.
  • Processes and maintains various paperwork and records, such as, but not limited to, equipment inventory and preventive maintenance records.
  • Maintain equipment and work areas in a clean and orderly condition. Inform the supervisor of faulty/broken equipment throughout the facility.
  • Assists University Policy and Department staff with securing and unlocking facility spaces required to provide guests access to the facilities. Corrects and/or reports guest irregularities to the proper authority.
  • Ensures the department follows current safety measures during winter periods by shoveling snow and ice from exterior/entryways and by applying materials that aid in melting ice and snow.
  • Ensure the safety of worksites, utilities, and equipment and relate safe work practices, correct or notify others of safety issues and needed repairs, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities

  • Appropriate valid driver's license with good driving record.
  • Ability to drive passenger vans by applicable laws and regulations.
  • Ability to operate large heavy equipment such as flatbed trucks, and hand and power-operated equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and write to maintain records and process paperwork.
  • Ability to interact with patrons, faculty, students, and staff, to answer questions, handle routine problems, and provide aid courteously.
  • Ability to work varied work schedules; overtime may be required based on seasonal demands.
  • Ability to lift, carry, or otherwise move and position objects and materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand, walk, or otherwise move about campus continuously.
  • Ability to ascend/descend stairs regularly.


Key Relationships

  • The Recreation Worker is directly supervised by the Assistant Director of Facilities and Aquatics.
  • This position has significant interactions with faculty and staff, students, and other outside constituencies, and must demonstrate strong customer service & interpersonal skills.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent preferred.
  • One-year related experience.


**This is a Bargaining Unit position. All newly hired employees in Bargaining Unit positions shall be considered “probationary” employees until completion of 90 calendar days of employment. These employees shall become members of the Bargaining Unit if this employment continues beyond four months. The university will notify the employees’ union. Bargaining Unit employees shall become eligible for benefits upon completion of their probationary period.
