EngAGE is a nonprofit that takes a whole-person approach to transform affordable senior, family, and intergenerational housing communities into vibrant centers of lifelong learning, creativity, and wellness through arts-based programming, civic engagement, and a culture that promotes community and social connection.

Since 1999, we have been dedicated to serving thousands of older adults and families across over 45 housing communities in California and Oregon, with plans to expand to additional states. Our model, which emphasizes artistic creativity and nurtures a sense of purpose and belonging, currently supporting 4,500 residents in California and 1,000 in Oregon.

Position Summary

After 25 years of service, our Founder and CEO is retiring. EngAGE seeks a compelling storyteller and fundraiser as its next Chief Executive Officer, one who will influence the organization towards favorable and sustainable growth, expand our revenue base, and design and direct strategies that support and enhance our organizational operations and programs. The ideal candidate will be a passionate advocate and spokesperson for intentionally designed affordable housing programs for the aging and intergenerational communities, and services that promote human connection and belonging for seniors and families.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO is responsible for organizational leadership, program innovation, strategic planning, board governance, developing and maintaining affordable housing developer relationships, grant writing, robust fundraising, and safeguarding the physical and financial well-being of the organization, including compliance with all relevant laws.

The successful candidate will be a consensus-driven leader who can work closely with the Board, executive team, staff, housing developers, funders, external consultants, and other stakeholders to manage the growth of the organization. This role will have oversight over multiple locations, with an annual operating budget of $2.5M, and manage a remote team of 30+, with 3 direct reports.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • In partnership with the Board, develop and implement a new strategic plan.
  • Lead the ongoing operations of the organization by collaborating with the leadership team to execute and evaluate programs, oversee the budgeting process, HR, legal, contracts, compliance, risk management, and financial management.
  • Impart fiscal leadership through sound financial management practices with effective internal controls. Lead the preparation of an annual organizational budget that prioritizes revenue growth and financial sustainability.
  • Serve as the organization’s lead fundraiser by identifying, cultivating, and stewarding relationships with current and prospective donors to achieve annual revenue goals and to explore new funding opportunities to increase and diversify revenue streams.
  • Oversee grants management and forge relationships with a broad spectrum of funding sources including corporations, public and private grant funders, government agencies, and individual contributors.
  • Build and foster trusting and collaborative relationships with affordable housing real estate developers to establish new partnerships and expand current programs.
  • Represent EngAGE and be its primary spokesperson through public speaking, media appearances, written newsletters and statements, and host events.
  • Build strong relationships with Board members. Identify new board members, support Board governance, and strategically deploy their strengths in support of fundraising, fiduciary oversight, and community relations.
  • Coordinate quarterly Board meeting schedules, meeting agendas, and Board reports.
  • Model and nurture a remote organizational culture of strong, effective communication and a sense of belonging and connection.
  • Lead and inspire staff, board, residents, stakeholders, developers, and funders.

 

Desired qualifications

The ideal Chief Executive Officer candidate will come with deep familiarity and a network in affordable housing, real estate development, and the intergenerational housing community in California. The CEO will be a strong communicator and will bring a demonstrated track record of being a masterful storyteller who can articulate and promote a compelling vision that unites the organization and galvanizes stakeholders, developer partners, and funders in support of EngAGE’s mission and values.

While it’s understood that no single candidate will bring every single competency, strong candidates will offer the following skills, characteristics, and experiences:

  • Passion and interest in working at the intersection of affordable housing programs, senior living, and community building.
  • 5 yrs of executive level leadership experience, preferably with nonprofits.
  • Prior knowledge or experience in affordable housing, intergenerational residential developments, low-income housing, senior living care in California is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with fundraising responsibilities, grant writing and diversifying funding sources.
  • Strong entrepreneurial drive and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key information both verbally and in writing to Board, Staff, and external stakeholders.
  • Sense of humor, integrity, transparency, and personal sense of accountability.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent working experience

 

Location

This role is a fully remote role but must be based in California. Our remote schedule allows continued flexibility for our staff with the option to work in local residential communities as needed or wanted. Candidates must be open to traveling within California, and to Oregon, to visit our current and prospective housing communities and develop and maintain relationships with developers.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary is based on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, skill set level and years of previous/applicable experience. Salary range for this role is between $145,000- $165,000, with a full benefits package, which includes health, dental and vision insurance, 401K with matching and a generous PTO policy.
