DESCRIPTION

UC San Diego Health has held its Magnet status since 2011.This candidate will serve as a expert clinician, educator, and consultant and leader for embedding evidence-based practice for newborn and post partum care into practice. The selected candidate will support nursing staff, patients, families and members of inter-professional health care teams to advance quality patient care and excellent outcomes. Will work collaboratively with Nursing Education team members and nursing leadership within Women and Infant Services, and other supporting units, at both La Jolla and Hillcrest campus. Job functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Support nursing orientation and competency validation, and curriculum development efforts for postpartum and newborn staff, as well as is indicated for house-wide topics.
  • Assume leadership role with interprofessional team in developing evidence-based clinical nursing practice by developing and updating policies and guidelines .
  • Promote nursing competency through education programs for both the newly-hired and experienced nursing staff based on needs assessment and practice changes.
  • Provide just in time training and consultation with staff related to new or complex diagnoses and procedures.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary consultations on complex nursing issues.
  • Supports mock code simulation exercises.
  • Work with multicultural patients and families.
  • Coordinate and ensure the implementation of an organized approach to management of high-risk patients.
  • Collaborate with WIS nursing and OB/Pediatric physician leadership to provide high quality patient care and ensure optimal patient outcomes.
  • Collaborate with Nursing Education team members to ensure consistent practice across Women and Infant services as well as alignment with nursing across UC San Diego Health.
  • Actively participate in efforts to monitor metrics and achieve quality outcomes for postpartum and newborn patients, Women and Infant Services, and UC San Diego Health.
  • Support Women and Infant Services in adhering to state and national regulatory requirements.
  • Mentor and coach clinical staff completing clinical advancement performance improvement or evidence-based practice change projects.

Under the direction of the department director or designee, the CNS or Nurse Educator prioritizes and manages multiple demands in an ever changing healthcare environment. Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills are required. Must be able to use word processing and presentation software. Ability to effectively coordinate efforts with others, including interdisciplinary groups. Self-motivated and proven ability to work both independently or effectively as a team member with a variety of healthcare specialists.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is required for the Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) role.

  • A Master's Degree in Nursing (MSN) is required for the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) role.

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the state of California.

  • Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) license issued by the state of California or licensure / certification in another advanced nurse practice discipline. Required to be hired in CNS role

  • BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within six (6) months of hire date.

  • Five (5+) or more years of recent and relevant clinical experience.

  • Recent experience developing educational programs, materials, and/or competencies, including using innovative and varied teaching modalities.

  • Experience with performance improvement or evidence-based practice change projects on departmental or organization level.

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, planning and leadership skills.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

  • Proficient with information systems and computer programs such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

  • In-depth knowledge of one or more clinical specialty areas, to include diagnoses, treatments, standards of practice and patient / family educational consulting and resources.

  • Advanced knowledge of methodology for conducting evidence-based research, data collection, analysis, and reporting.

  • Advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills to assess highly-complex issues and develop multiple options for resolution.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Five (5+) or more years of recent and relevant educator experience
  • Specialty certification in related nursing field.
  • Evidence of training in health equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Experience working with external groups to address health disparities and promote equitable access to healthcare services.
  • Experience in academic medical center.
  • Experience with professional presentations and publication.
  • NRP instructor.

  • Selected candidate may be hired to the CNS or CNE role depending on experience and credentials.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $128,800 - $252,200 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $61.69 - $120.79

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
