SUMMARY

Manages some combination of the following: the development of functional designs, underlying engineering calculations, technical requirements for equipment, key attributes for testing of shipboard system design development of a 3D model or CAD, drawing, production information development, technical manual development and provisioning. Responsible for coordinating efforts with the whole Engineering Department, communicating with Government, SupShip, ABS, Customers and Commercial owners. Maintain high-level quality work, Creating Purchase Specifications, Calculations, schedules, and reports. Provides technical coaching and counsel on professional development to subordinates. Ensure that all program cost and schedule requirements are achieved for the respective department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

  • Leads Engineering Department, pro-actively seeking improved methods, materials and design for assigned work. Motivates subordinates to work in teams, and to provide a high level of service to internal and external customers. Fosters unit cohesion. Facilities and leads technical, and design problem solving discussions. Assists in negotiation to technical and design issues with customers. Communicates alternatives and decisions upward to management and downward to subordinates. Manages conflict fairly, objectively, and with a high degree of professional integrity. Demonstrates loyalty to subordinates and to Company objectives. Maintains discipline to established processes recognizes extraordinary performance by subordinates.
  • Works with other Engineering, Preproduction and production managers to improve overall Company performance and to resolve major technical issues. Supports marketing efforts, as required, in obtaining new business by developing design products such as block breakdowns and arrangements.
  • Plans by analyzing assigned work scope, developing budget and schedule targets, assigning technical risk, preparing alternative technical strategies, communicating technical guidance, and determine required skill mix and resources. Arranges for subcontract resources (farm-in or outsourcing) as required. Responsible for hiring, training and development of technical staff.
  • Develop competence by documenting skill needs, appraising capabilities of assigned employees, requesting training in advance of required application, and participating in both formal and informal training and orientation. Administers performance evaluations and coaching for subordinates, directly for supervisors and by Supervisors for remaining design personnel. Also, manages subcontract resources either assigned in house or through outsource work assignments. Review work to ensure that consistent performance is attained throughout Hull Engineering Department.
  • Other responsibilities and duties as assigned.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or maritime related field required, Master's Degree in Engineering or Business Administration desirable. Required knowledge includes shipbuilding practice, government contracting principles, Classification Society Rules, and US Coast Guard requirements as they apply to the disciplines managed.
  • Experience: At least 8 years of progressively responsible engineering experience required; at least 3 years of this experience must be at a Supervisor level or above. Several years of this experience must be in the maritime industry.
  • Communications: Must be able to clearly and effectively communicate complex technical issues; will have excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Style: Pro-active leadership style required, with propensity to plan ahead, anticipate problems, facilitate strategies, and manage conflict. Will have demonstrated planning and leadership skills.
  • Other desired style characteristics include: Team builder, process orientation, broad business view, intellectual flexibility, creativeness, and willingness to be an active participant in management teams. Must be capable of effectively advocating, driving, and implementing changes to long-held processes and work cultures.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work primarily conducted in an office setting with good lighting.Requires ability to work in office environment, go aboard ship during construction, climb ladders, work throughout yard as required, and participate in Sea Trials when required.Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus. Regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, operate computer keyboard and controls, and communicate verbally and in writing. Must be physically able to commute to buildings throughout the shipyard. Occasional exposure to dust, fumes and moderate levels of noise.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Accountable for high quality, with efficient and timely completion of assigned projects. Accountable for quality of technical products and deliverables. Reports to Director of Engineering.

PAY SCALE

$159,100 - $209,200

This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions; including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
