Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
Offers technical and administrative assistance to campus Landscape Tech Supervisor or Horticulturist.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelors degree in horticulture, agronomy or related field.

Two years in landscape construction, agronomy, or landscape maintenance work.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Comprehensive knowledge of the practices and techniques of landscape construction, agronomy, and/or landscape maintenance; of plant life as applied to ornamental horticulture; of plant materials, planting techniques, erosion control, and pesticides.
- Working knowledge of landscape design and construction work.
- Skill in reading and interpreting landscape architectural plans, specifications, proposal forms and estimates; in the use and maintenance of tools and equipment of the trade; in making field investigations.
- Ability to plan and program assigned projects; to organize and lead the work of assigned personnel; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to prepare comprehensive reports; to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to work from ladders and lifts; to work at heights up to 35 feet; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies and/or exert force up to 50 lbs.; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on machinery and equipment; to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather and temperature conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

- Working knowledge of horticulture, entomology, agronomy, plant pathology, and arboriculture, soil, and stormwater management.
- Thorough knowledge of the practices and techniques of landscape construction, agronomy and/or landscape practices and techniques of landscape maintenance; of plant life as applied to ornamental horticulture.
- Knowledgeable of plant materials, planting techniques, erosion control, and integrated pest management.
- Ability to read and interpret landscape architectural plans, specifications, proposal forms and estimates; skill in the use and maintenance of tools and equipment of the trade; and in making field investigations.
- Ability to plan and program assigned projects; to organize and lead the work of assigned personnel; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to prepare comprehensive reports and utilize common digital formats for communication.
- Responds to and understands that the campus community is our customer and treats them in an appropriate manner.
- Applicant possesses computer skills to enable them to use email on a daily basis, Word/Excel and navigate the UMD WorkDay computer programs.
- Recognize that the entire University campus is an Arbnet accredited level IV arboretum and to work here will require ongoing education throughout their employment. The education will span many fields from computer proficiency to plant identification.
- MDE Responsible Personnel Training. Tree Care and/or Turf management Specialty. Experience in plant inventory data management.
Additional Certifications:
- Must possess and maintain a valid Maryland Class C driver’s license (or equivalent) with fewer than 6 points.
- Must be licensed by the State of Maryland as a Certified Pesticide Applicator, Categories 3A (Ornamental Plants and Shade Trees-Exterior), 3C (Turf and Lawn Pest Control) and 6 (Right of Way and Weed). If hired without the certification, must be able to sit for the exam and obtain certification within 6 months of employment, and remain medically certified to apply pesticides. This is a condition of employment.
- Must be a Maryland Certified Professional Fertilizer Applicator. If hired without the certification, must be able to sit for the exam and obtain certification within 6 months of employment. This is a condition of employment.

- Must be able to work in adverse weather and temperature extremes and be free from debilitating pollen allergies and the like.
- The employee must have the ability to perform the physical requirements of the position including the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and on occasion up to 100 pounds; stand and walk continuously; lift, stoop, and/or bend for extended periods of time; wear and work with the use of personal protective equipment (gloves, goggles, etc.).
- The shift hours are from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
- Position is Essential and is subject to 24-hour day/7-day week span of operation.
