The field crop technician position will assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of outcome-based Extension educational programs addressing the issues and opportunities identified in Perquimans County. The areas of responsibility for this position include field crops including soybeans, small grains, cotton, corn and peanuts.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension field faculty deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.

Perquimans County (population 13,453) is located in rural northeastern North Carolina. There are 2 major towns in Perquimans, Hertford (the county seat) and Winfall. Hertford is located along Highway 17, 50 miles south of Chesapeake, Virginia and about 65 miles west of the Outer Banks and 150 miles from Raleigh, North Carolina The county is mostly rural with agriculture being critical to the economy. Primary crops include cotton, corn, soybeans, peanuts and wheat.

Other Work/Responsibilities
The primary purpose of this position is to assist the Perquimans County Extension Field Crops Program and Volunteers.
The successful candidate is expected to support the development, implementation and evaluation of an Extension educational program addressing the needs of agricultural producers in Perquimans County.
The ag technician will help determine program needs by monitoring trends and issues using input from appropriate Extension advisory committees and NC State University and NC A&T State University specialists,
This position will work with row crop farmers to provide them with research based information.
This position is responsible for staying up to date with the latest products and technologies offered. This position will spend time and effort, along with other staff to promote agriculture in Perquimans County.
The successful candidate is expected to be a team player in working with other Extension staff and networking with other organizations.

The minimum requirement for employment with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension (NCCE) is a high-school diploma or equivalent. Advanced training in related fields is preferred.
Department Required Skills
Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws and standard practices, methods, and
techniques pertaining to field crops.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Ability to use common office machines, including computer programs involving website and app maintenance. Must be proficient in Excel and Word software programs, and comfortable using email and digital calendars.
Associate’s degree required.
Preferred candidates will have working knowledge and experience in the farming industry.
Required License or Certification
Valid Driver’s License and reliable, personal transportation required. Valid North Carolina driver’s license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
