Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Manager position is responsible for student advising, center programming, financial operations, personnel management, and communications for the Latin American Studies Center on a day-to-day basis.

Student Advising includes: Advising current Undergraduate Certificate and Minor students and Graduate Certificate students on curricular requirements and course offerings; oversight of internships to include the development of new internship opportunities, maintenance and cultivation of existing internship relationships, and coordination of performance reports; analysis of student achievement data; management of learning outcomes, including data collection and reporting; and oversight of the language competency assessment.

Center Programming includes: Working closely with the Director and using initiative and creativity to help with planning and managing of oversight, administration, and publicity of Center events, including conferences, speaking engagements, meetings, and workshops; maintaining curriculum, including staffing of courses, contracting faculty, and scheduling classes; supporting the campus Latinx student organizations; and coordinating Graduate-Undergraduate mentorship program.

Financial Management includes: Performing payroll and budgetary duties in compliance with ARHU, UMD and State policies and procedures; creating departmental budgets in accordance with UMD and state budgetary guideline; monitoring expenditures and initiating transfer of funds; reconciling monthly financial statements and making adjustments; preparing monthly and quarterly budget reports for the department and for grants as needed; generating annual budget reports with 5-year projections/forecasts; approving and managing departmental related travel and purchases in the relevant systems, including Workday; and reviewing grant proposal budgets and effort reports.

Personnel Management includes: Managing personnel benefits; initiating appointment contracts and processing payroll for all departmental employees (faculty, staff, graduate assistants, students, and outside consultants); responding to employee, college, and campus inquiries for information and reports; and advising the Director on University personnel and payroll policies.

Communications and Outreach includes: coordinating recruitment efforts, including class visits as well as academic and cultural events; developing the alumni network and fostering alumni relationships, including data tracking and outreach, as well as cultivation and management of alumni network and support; the development of partnerships with units on campus; oversight of social media activities for the Center, as well as publication of magazine and newsletter; and managing community engagement within and beyond the campus.

This is an in-person position. Telework may be available up to two (2) days per week, subject to approval.

Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:
Three years experience in administrative support in a field related to education, including but not limited to student advising.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of financial management, accounting principles, and budget reporting as well as strong organizational, data management, and administrative skills.
  • Capable of working independently with minimal supervision; ability to work with a diverse student body, faculty and staff in a multi-tasking working environment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in spoken and written English
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel

Preferences:

  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Experience using University of Maryland’s financial and personnel systems.
  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Three years of increasing responsibility in a financial position at the University of Maryland.
  • Knowledge of Latin America.
  • Experience with culturally diverse environments
  • Ability to speak and write clearly and effectively in a commonly spoken language in Latin America, such as Spanish, Portuguese, or French.
  • Experience planning and administering academic/cultural events.

Salary range is $68,000-$85,000.

Candidates must be able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the USA. No visa sponsorship is offered for this position.

The University provides a comprehensive benefits package, including 22 days of annual leave, 15 days of sick leave, 3 days of personal leave, 15 paid holidays, tuition remission, and health, dental, vision, and prescription coverage.
