Job Description

Founded in 1979, the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) is a center for innovation dedicated to advancing the field of gifted education through research on testing, programs, and other supports for advanced learners. On the premise that advanced learners come from every community and every demographic, we aim to understand and inform how these students need to be nurtured to achieve their full potential as learners and global citizens. CTY also runs in-person and online academic programs for bright learners in order to cultivate a community of advanced learners and connect students in and outside the classroom.


We are seeking a CTY Assistant Director Staff Experience, to lead activities related to the staff experience in CTY’s core academic programs. CTY’s core academic experiences for advanced learners are designed to be rigorous, novel for CTY students in content or approach, and to foster a fun peer community. Programs vary in length and modality (in-person residential, in-person day, virtual, hybrid). The role reports to the Director, In-Person Experiences, and supervises one or more CTY Program Managers. With the Director, the Assistant Director, Staff Experience, works in close collaboration with the Assistant Director, Student Experience, on overall leadership of the unit. Unique challenges of the role are serving minors in a higher education setting and managing staff who live as well as work on campus throughout their employment. As CTY moves toward a Unified Core Program space, this role will help build a unified staff experience across program modalities.


The CTY Assistant Director role functions in a heavily matrixed and collaborative environment. The environment is fast-paced with spikes in intensity. Good judgment, organization, flexibility, resilience, and strong leadership and communication skills are critical to success.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of approaches to day-to-day leadership, management and supervision of CTY program staffing, beginning with CTY-s in person summer site staffing, and with an eye toward building leading the staff experience across modalities. CTY’s in-person summer sites currently employ 1,400+ individuals annually, about three-quarters in residential setting.
  • Engage with Director in proactive workforce planning to ensure full time and site staffing needs are identified with focus on ensuring optimized skills, talents and experiences are represented to the benefit of CTY students.
  • Lead the planning and implementation of annual multi-day training experience for site leaders.
  • Lead the development of structures and approaches for pre-session preparation and on-site training, orientation and ongoing development of instructional, residential and administrative support staff, collaborating on content as appropriate with subject matter experts across CTY and the University.
  • Oversee the process of disseminating resources and materials to instructors, liaising with Curriculum & Instructional Design unit as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with CTY Evaluation staff to assess effectiveness of staff training and development efforts.
  • Serve as the unit’s primary liaison with CTY’s HR function.
    • Ensure that program staff complete assigned recruitment, hiring and onboarding responsibilities, including requisition management, timely and in compliance with University policies and practices.
    • Support full time program managers and site leaders in addressing site staff job performance concerns and staff conduct violations.
    • Consult on all matters related to program staffing: compensation, desired candidate profiles, sourcing strategies for each role, etc.
  • Lead annual review and dissemination of site emergency preparation and crisis response plans.
  • Directly supervise at least one CTY Program Manager.
    • Ensure that Program Manager’s assigned sites deliver a high-quality on-site experience for students and staff that aligns with CTY’s core values, including diversity, equity and inclusion, and that runs smoothly logistically and in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
    • Address concerns from or about parents, students or staff of high severity, in consultation with unit/CTY/JHU leadership and resources, including the Office of Institutional Equity. This responsibility includes speaking with concerned parents and holding conversations with staff about job performance or conduct violations.
    • Be on call throughout the times that in-person programs are in session to respond to urgent and emergent issues on site.
    • Fill in on site in emergency situations.
  • Support or participate in research efforts of the organization.
  • Provide service to CTY and the University through participating in occasional CTY- or University-wide projects. For example, serve a term on the DEI@CTY Staff Council.

Specific Physical Requirements

  • Ability to travel to out-of-state program locations.
  • Ability to be on call nights and weekends while in-person programs are in session.


Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience in articulating and executing on strategic priorities.
  • By way of experience, ability to work independently and as part of a team to achieve individual and shared goals within a complex institution.
  • Demonstrated experience with project and people management.
  • Ability to lead others in managing seasonal spikes of work volume and intensity.
  • Experience with recruiting, screening and onboarding staff in an education setting.
  • Experience with defining and prioritizing training and development needs.
  • Experience with creating training and development content for adult audiences; experience presenting or facilitating in both in-person and online formats.
  • Strong multicultural competency and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders to achieve equitable and inclusive results.
  • Comfortable with technology and able to quickly learn and use a wide range of systems (SAP, Handshake) and communication and collaboration tools (SharePoint, Zoom, Teams).
  • Ability to listen and communicate convincingly in written and verbal formats.
  • Experience with programs that serve minors in a higher education setting.


Additional Information

  • This position is hybrid (working at JHU’s Mt. Washington site 3 days a week).
  • Must be able to travel and work nights, weekends and holidays (when holidays are worked, exempt employees may take an alternate holiday within 60 days).
  • Position may be required to be in residence at an in-person program site in the event of emergency.
  • Time off is restricted between Memorial Day and the close of the in-person sites.
  • Candidate must be authorized to work in the US.
  • The successful candidate(s) for this position are subject to a pre-employment background check. All employees participating in or serving children in university programs must participate in mandatory Child Abuse Prevention online training on the appropriate conduct around children, protecting children from abuse and neglect, and reporting of known or suspected child abuse and neglect.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree.
  • Five or more years of related experience in an educational program setting.
  • Additional (graduate) education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula, 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.



Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with advanced learners or course work or training in gifted education.
  • Experience working with residential programs.
