Accounting Specialist (Department of Health, Nutrition, and Food Sciences)
Job Description
This position performs highly specialized professional accounting work for the Department of Health, Nutrition, and Food Sciences. Serves as Budget Manager and monitors the business activities of the department maintenance and control of financial records.
Responsible for day-to-day processes of procurement, accounts receivable billings/internal auxiliary, disbursements, and travel. Ensures a sound environment of internal controls and compliance by monitoring and reviewing transactional processes. Interprets and communicate policies to leadership and staff and provides recommendations to support the mission of the department while maintaining compliance with university policies and procedures. Performs strategic planning with the Senior Administrative Specialist and Chair for the department.
Serves as the Budget Manager and Financial Representative for the department of Health, Nutrition, and Food Sciences. Responsible for accurate tracking, maintenance, and reconciliation of departmental accounts and ledgers. Reviews transactions for adherence to university policy and procedures. Attends relevant trainings and Financial Rep meetings, ensuring that the department has access to the most up-to-date materials and guidance from the department and University. Advises on financial activities by analyzing trends, providing information, and preparing reports, such as internal budgeting spreadsheets, to assist the Senior Administrative Specialist with budget preparation and development.
Provides procurement and P-card support including the processing of requisitions, purchase orders, P-card proxy, ePRFs, and contract renewals. Audits cash collection transactions to ensure that cash collection rules, regulations, and procedures of the University are adhered to and applied. Performs monthly p-card reconciliations for assigned cards. Ensures transactions are timely and accurately with the appropriate accounting information, description and follow State and University policies and procedures.
Responsible for day-to-day processes of travel and serves as a travel delegate to the department. Serves as liaison to the Travel Central Office.
Assists with special projects and assignments as needed that align with the goals and objectives of the department.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and two years of experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent and six years of experience. (Note: a combination of post high school education and experience equal to six years.)

- Ability to prioritize, organize and perform multiple work assignments simultaneously.
- Ability to compile, review, and reconcile data for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
- Knowledge of and the ability to interpret and apply related University policies, procedures, principles, and practices.
- Knowledge of electronic data processing as it applies to fiscal and accounting activities.
- Knowledge of and ability to apply Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
