ABOUT THE POSITION AND THE SOCIOLOGY DEPARTMENT AT NORMANDALE
The sociology department at Normandale Community College supports students working toward degrees in sociology, criminal justice, peace officer and public safety, and women’s studies and includes certificates in family studies and law enforcement. We are committed to offering a quality education and learning opportunities for all students. We value diversity for students and faculty. The successful candidate will be expected to:
  • Teach in an inclusive, student-ready, and culturally responsive manner to meet the needs of our diverse student body.
  • Teach a broad spectrum of Sociology courses including day and evening classes, and utilizing different instructional modalities, including online, face to face, and hybrid delivery formats.
  • Work as a team member in maintaining a student-ready learning environment that meets the educational needs of a diverse student body.
  • Contribute to department, division, and college goals, which provide the basis for program planning, implementation, evaluation and support
  • Engage in scholarly activities consistent with the college’s goals
  • Be committed to the success and retention of underrepresented students
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and experience in assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Participate in the development and improvement of curricula and courses.
  • Participate in faculty and department meetings and College-wide committees.
 
Minimum Qualifications
 
Education Requirements
  • Master's degree with a major in sociology or a Master's degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester credits (27 graduate quarter credits) in sociology.
 
Teaching and Learning Competency Requirement

  • philosophy of community and technical college education (credit or non-credit course)**
  • Faculty shall have a degree in education or three years of successful full-time (or equivalent) teaching experience prior to being hired, or shall be required to complete coursework in the above content areas (or their equivalent) prior to being granted unlimited status.
  • These courses shall be waived for individuals who at the time of hire have: a degree in education, or have documented evidence of successful completion of equivalent coursework in the specified teaching and learning content areas, or have three years of successful, full-time (or equivalent) secondary, postsecondary, industry, or trade apprenticeship teaching experience in the field for which they are being hired. (Procedure 3.32.1 College Faculty Credentialing, Part 5, Subpart B.2)
  • ** This course shall be waived for individuals who, at the time of hire, have documented evidence of successful completion of equivalent coursework. (Procedure 3.32.1 College Faculty Credentialing, Part 5, Subpart B.3)

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated teaching across the sociology discipline with an emphasis in criminology and/or criminal justice.
  • Experience in the criminal justice system (law enforcement, corrections, adjudication)
  • Experience with teaching in-person, hybrid, and online courses
  • Experience teaching in diverse and underserved populations
  • Experience providing specific strategies to create a sense of belonging within the classroom,
  • Experience teaching courses with innovative teaching practices to support the success and retention of underrepresented students, including students of color, first-generation students, and Pell eligible students
  • Knowledge of the community college mission and its unique student population
  • Evidence of professional development related to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Experience with collegial activities - service on committees, developing assessment, guiding students, and professional development
