MBSE - Digital Engineer

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab

Job Description

Description

Would you love to become an expert in developing new tools and systems for the warfighter of tomorrow while analyzing and supplementing current capabilities?

Are you passionate about innovation and making new capabilities a reality?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL!

We are seeking a Systems Engineer to help us research and develop Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) artifacts integrated within a digital engineering environment. We provide vital mission engineering, systems engineering, and software engineering expertise to nationally important precision strike capabilities for the Department of Defense. We are developing the tools necessary to change the way our military engages with peer adversaries.

As a member of our Systems Engineering team, you will contribute to developing models, architecture frameworks, model profiles, and systems engineering processes that are cohesively implemented within a larger digital engineering framework (modeling and simulation, software/hardware engineering, test and evaluation, data science and visualization etc.).

You will be joining a hardworking team of engineers and scientists who develop technologies, architectures, decision aids, and prototypes that enable warfighters to harness a diverse set of assets to accomplish a variety of missions critical to our nation's defense. Our team is committed to ensuring that mission success is centric to the system's design and development. We strive to foster an inclusive environment that values and promotes creative ideas.

As an MBSE Digital Engineer for the Mission Engineering Group ...

  • Your primary responsibility will be to develop and promote MBSE models for the design and implementation of complex systems and systems of systems critical to the warfighter.
  • You will develop and analyze systems engineering artifacts that contribute to and align with the full systems design life cycle.
  • You will participate and collaborate with engineers across multiple disciplines to design, architect, and implement systems critical to the warfighter.
  • You will design and develop new digital engineering capabilities and processes for APL and our sponsors.
  • You will develop model profiles, tool plug-ins, architecture frameworks, and model queries in the MBSE tools throughout a system’s life-cycle from concept definition through fielding and support.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Have a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, mathematics, physics or another related technical field.
  • Have experience performing systems engineering in the design, development and/or evaluation of complex systems.
  • Have experience in system modeling using UML/SysML and associated modeling software, such as Cameo, Rhapsody, or SPARX EA.
  • Have direct experience applying aspects of MBSE in support of system development.
  • Have software development experience or coursework related to software engineering.
  • Are highly creative, a self starter, and interested in novel challenges.
  • Have especially strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Have a strong ability to successfully apply educational background to real-world engineering problems.
  • Are willing and able to periodically travel to and work at military facilities.
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You 'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Have a Master's or doctorate degree in systems engineering.
  • Have experience in systems engineering for DoD systems.
  • Have relevant Object Management Group (OMG) or other systems engineering certifications.
  • Have worked with modeling frameworks such as the Department of Defense Architecture Framework or Unified Architecture Framework.
  • Have expertise writing custom scripts and/or plug-ins for Cameo modeling software and/or DOORS requirements software.
  • Have Agile software development experience.
  • Have experience integrating models across multiple software applications to perform detailed analysis by leveraging data from several engineering domains.
