Organizational Description
Sunflower Bakery is non-profit, social enterprise that uses food as a tool to enable pathways for employment for young adults with learning differences through skilled job training and employment opportunities in the baking, hospitality, culinary and related industries. Sunflower’s workforce development training programs include Pastry Arts and Hospitality Employment, a pre-employment Teen Exposure Program, and a just launched Culinary pilot.
Position
It’s an exciting time to be part of the Sunflower Bakery team. As we build on a strong foundation, Sunflower is looking to grow and scale our impact in the community. To support this work, Sunflower is looking for a dynamic and experienced individual to serve as Director of Student Services. This position will report directly to the Executive Director and will work closely with the Program Director and team. The Director of Student Services’ main role is to recruit for Sunflower’s employment training, support our students as they matriculate through the program and ensure our instructors have the tools they need to work with our students.
Position Requirements/Essential Functions
● Collaborate with the Program Director on development and implementation of recruiting and relationship-building to recruit for new classes working with service providers, therapists, educators, MD Department of Rehabilitation Services, DC Rehabilitation Services Administration, etc.
● Serve as lead in the application process, interview and assessment with program team, applicant and family.
● Develop and maintain communications with outreach partners and attend outreach events in the community to raise awareness and provide information on Sunflower’s work and programs.
● Attend and present about Sunflower’s work at relevant local conferences.
● Develop quarterly program updates and information to be disseminated to Sunflower stakeholders and potential students/families.
● Monitor Sunflower website to ensure that program information remains current.
● Work with the program director on review and refinement of student related policies and procedures.
● Create students’ Individualized Employment Plans and work with Program team and student/families to implement plan.
● Advise on issues surrounding student enrollment and training and work with instructors to implement strategies, plans, or techniques.
● Provide training for staff, informal and formal, regarding on how best to work with students.
● Facilitate dissemination of information on disability services for our students.
● Oversee instructors/student/family meetings to discuss student progress.
● Provide guidance to Job Services team as necessary on strategies to support students in employment.
● Oversee that both electronic and related hardcopy files are kept updated.
● Track reporting requirements and work with staff to ensure they are completed in a timely manner.
● With Business Manager, track and ensure that program fees are up to date.
● With Program Director, collect data and track/report on key performance indicators.
● Provide quarterly reports on student and applicant data to the Program Director for quarterly board reports and as needed.
Qualifications
· Degree in special education, social work or related field, with licensure. MA preferred.
● At least 5 years’ experience working with individuals with learning differences and/or other cognitive disabilities 18+ in an academic and/or vocational setting. May include volunteer experience.
● Experience working with state rehabilitation agencies (MD Division of Rehabilitation Services, DC Rehabilitation Services Administration), preferred.
● Demonstrated proficiency with computer/database skills (Google, Microsoft).
● Must be committed to Sunflower’s mission.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
● Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to present to a group.
● Excellent verbal skills when communicating with adults with receptive and expressive language disabilities, as well as their families.
● Demonstrated effective time management skills.
● Strong interpersonal skills that and ability work well with diverse groups of constituents and colleagues.
● Excellent attention to detail and follow-through to complete a quality work product in a timely manner.
● Knowledge of Jewish culture, customs, holidays, and kashrut is desirable.
Position
This is a full-time, exempt, in-office position. Regular working hours are Monday- Friday, 8:30-5:00pm (earlier closings on Fridays during winter) with additional time for events, meetings, etc. Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. Sunflower offers a generous benefit package including Jewish holiday days off, most Federal holidays off, a health plan and a 401K plan with employer match.
