Introduction:

The Kapo?oloku program is designed to support Native Hawaiian Student Success at Kapi?olani Community College (KapCC). This student support specialist reports to the Counselor /Coordinator for the Native Hawaiian program.  This position is responsible for managing daily program operations, serving as the point of contact for students, and organizing engagement and success activities. 


Duties and Responsibilities
(NOTE: ** denotes Essential Functions)

  • **Under the supervision of the Counselor / Coordinator for the Native Hawaiian Program, this position directs daily operations of the Native Hawaiian Program Office and serves as a point of contact for the Native Hawaiian Students.

  • **Coordinates support services to Native Hawaiian students to improve student success and engagement, working closely with other programs such as Financial Aid, First Year Experience, academic tutoring, TRIO, STEM, Service Learning, and Phi Theta Kappa.

  • Under the supervision of the Counselor / Coordinator for the Native Hawaiian Program, works with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness to collect data and assess the progress of the Native Hawaiian students to improve student success and completion.

  • **Under the Coordinator, is responsible for meeting stated program outcomes for the Native Hawaiian Student Program and student services tactical plans. Develops an assessment tool to evaluate student performance and persistence

  • Attends meetings with granting and other external agencies, and may respond to inquiries on behalf of the Coordinator.

  • Develops and integrates Native Hawaiian cultural traditions and practices into program services as a way of building students’ identity and Hawaiian values.

  • Collaborates with other KapCC student engagement programs to design and implement programs and activities to promote student engagement, learning, and achievement.

  • Initiates and coordinates updates and timely relevance of the official website and office publications.

  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications

  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Hawaiian Studies, Counseling, Education, Social Work, Public Administration, or a related field and one (1) year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for student services or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated.

  2. Functional knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques in the area of student services, recruitment, orientation, evaluating student records, and advising students or related work demonstrated by knowledge, understanding, and ability to apply concepts and terminology.

  3. Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and systems associated with student services or related work.

  4. Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes, and resolve the full range of problems that may commonly occur in student services or related work.

  5. Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.

  6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members, and individuals.

  7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.


Desirable Qualifications

  1. Experience in providing counseling, academic/career planning and/or teaching Native Hawaiians at the post-secondary level; advocacy work within the Hawaiian community, or a combination of these experiences.

  2. Considerable knowledge of Native Hawaiian culture, language, history, educational programs, issues, and resources.

  3. Evidence of commitment to Kapi‘olani Community College’s vision of positioning itself as a model indigenous serving institution whose graduates strengthen the social, economic, and sustainable advancement of Hawai‘i and the world.
