Assistant Director, Corporate Partnerships, Life Sciences

Job Description

Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV) supports the commercialization of university technology through technology licensing, the development of corporate research collaborations and venture creation. JHTV serves as a business advisor to investigators at all nine schools of the university whose research has commercial potential and provides a set of specific resources to aid them in applying world-class science to the market in industries ranging from biotech to industrial manufacturing and energy.


Corporate Partnerships at JHTV is the university’s front door for corporate partners seeking academic collaboration. Corporate Partnerships shepherd both university faculty and external partners towards establishment of research collaboration and provide support through the life cycle of the relationships.


We are seeking an Assistant Director, Corporate Partnerships, Life Sciences to serve as a liaison between Johns Hopkins faculty and corporate partners in support of University’s research collaborations. Other duties include supporting inbound and outbound business development efforts for new opportunity creation and expansion of existing corporate relationships.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Business Development (70%)

  • Leads the sourcing of technologies and research programs to be presented as potential research projects for industry collaborations.
  • Assists with developing programming for business development events and organizing visits by industry partners.
  • Identifies companies with potential interest in collaborating with faculty and performs research to identify the individuals in each company whom we should approach.
  • Maintains records of industry engagement in customer relational database.
  • Works with faculty in preparation of slides for meetings with potential industry partners.


Alliance and Relationship Management (30%)

  • Supports management of industry collaborations and agreements including overseeing deliverables and maintaining partnerships.
  • Coordinates matters relating to managed collaborations including scheduling and managing committee meetings, ensuring compliance with all aspects of the alliance agreements, and overseeing the completion of any required third-party agreements involved to support the research.
  • Tracks administrative matters relating to the RFPs (Request for Proposals) for projects and research programs, once launched.
  • Coordinates meetings, workshops, conferences between faculty and the partners.
  • Actively captures corporate partners’ priority areas and scientific interest and convert them to new opportunities.


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to make independent judgments and act on decisions on a daily basis and assumes responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people, costs, and/or quality of service within the functional area.
  • Ability to work with flexibility on several tasks simultaneously and to meet various concurrent deadlines.
  • Ability to work in matrix environment with collaborative mindset.
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. Experience with Salesforce preferable.
  • Ability to effectively interact with all levels of industry and University employees.
  • Highly organized, resourceful, and detail oriented.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in life or physical sciences required.
  • Five years related experience working with academic faculty or working in industry in a similar function.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • U.S. Citizen or legal permanent resident required due to Federal Export Controls.
  • PhD in life or physical sciences or an MBA with an undergraduate degree in life or physical sciences strongly preferred.
  • Business development experience preferred.
  • Experience with various software applications (e.g. spreadsheets, relational databases, statistical and graphic packages), to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports.

Starting Salary Range: $73,300-$100,800-$128,300 ($90,000 targeted, commensurate with experience)
