Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

To support grounds care/maintenance and landscaping necessary to maintain university facilities.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

Experience:
One year as a groundskeeper.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Working knowledge of the general care of grounds.
  • Knowledge of techniques for cultivating, planting, mowing, and caring for lawns, gardens, shrubs and trees.
  • Working knowledge of and skill in the operation and proper care of assigned hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Ability to read, write, and perform arithmetic calculations.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform work in, on, around, under, and over trees, shrubs, buildings and facilities.
  • Ability to work at heights up to 35 feet.
  • Ability to perform physical work requiring bending, stooping, reaching, carrying and heavy lifting.
  • Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Ability to follow directions in regard to grounds care and maintenance and use of equipment. Ability to read and write and perform basic numerical calculations is required.
  • Ability to communicate with a diverse population is required.

Additional Certifications:

Possession of a valid Maryland Class C license (or equivalent) with fewer than 6 points is desired.

Additional Information:

The shift hours are from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Position is Essential and is subject to 24 hour day/7 day week span of operation.

Physical Demands

Must be able to work in adverse weather and temperature extremes and be free from debilitating pollen allergies and the like. The employee must have the ability to perform the physical requirements of the position including the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and on occasion up to 100 pounds; stand and walk continuously; lift, stoop, and/or bend for extended periods of time; wear and work with the use of personal protective equipment (gloves, goggles, etc.).
