Position Summary

  • Revised
Responsible for providing retention support systems including coaching, mentoring, and supplemental instruction to ensure student success and retention for students. Responsible for engaging students in a variety of student services activities to ensure progression towards graduation leading to career or transfer goals; works in collaboration with faculty, various student support services professionals and students at the college.

Salary Schedule Placement: Appropriate placement on Salary Schedule E4 05 ($34,298 -$50,697) based on experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Serves as a Success Coach, primary responsibilities include closing student stop-out gap, communicating with students and faculty, assisting students with resources, and providing timely interventions to help students in their academic progress.
  • Provide information and assist students in areas such as academic standing, college policies, campus resources, college admissions to selective programs, major and course selection, financial aid information, and graduation requirements.
  • Support students acclimating to college, bridging gaps of knowledge, and transitioning to alternative modalities that differ from “traditional” classroom structure.
  • Acts as a liaison between various student services areas such as Advising, Student Disability Services, Career Services and Financial Aid.
  • Assists faculty and staff in identifying trends and researching best practices in student retention.
  • Utilizes data and retention software to guide interventions and monitors effectiveness and student progress.
  • Participate in appropriate training/professional development, including state and region association conferences.
  • Assist in statistical data collection for reporting and/or funding purposes.
  • Assist in updating and/or developing academic success and advising resources including, but not limited to online and print resources.
  • Assist in advising students regarding degree/certificate plans and STARS articulation agreements as appropriate to program.
  • Assist in advising procedures, monitor advising center activity, tracking, and providing academic support to students as assigned.
  • Support retention programs by following up on existing initiatives and identifying new outreach opportunities;
  • Assist students in assessing their skills, interests and aptitudes as well as identifying realistic career goals and developing individual educational plans;
  • Provide assistance to students and instructors to problem solve issues that arise related to progress towards academic goals, persistence, attendance, and graduation;
  • Assist with events and other learning opportunities that support students in reaching their academic and career goals.
  • To perform other job-related duties as assigned by the appropriate administrative head.

 

Qualifications


 


REQUIRED EDUCATION, STANDARDS, AND TRAINING:
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, Social Science, or a related field from a regionally accredited institution
  • Experience in collegiate advising/counseling required.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and travel as needed.
REQUIRED LICENSE, CERTIFICATION, OR SPECIAL CREDENTIALS:
  • None
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS AND JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office.

Sick Leave
All regular full-time non-instructional staff earns one day of sick leave which is the equivalent of 8 hours of sick leave per month. Unused sick leave is rolled over to the following year. Upon retirement, employees are allowed to convert unused sick time into service time for the purpose of retirement. Up to 10 days a year of professional development leave with pay may be granted by the President.

Retirement
The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions. Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control. The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA. The TRS is a defined benefit plan qualified under Section 401(a) of the Internal Revenue Code. All regular full-time and part-time employees (non-temporary and non- student) who work at least 20 hours per week are required to participate in The Teachers' Retirement System of Alabama.
Tier I - Pays 7.50% monthly. State matches 13.57% (effective 10/01/24)
Tier II – Pays 6.20% monthly. State matches 12.60% (effective 10/01/24)
Law Enforcement Officers:
Tier I-Pays 8.50% monthly. State matches 13.57% (effective 10/01/24)
Tier II- Pays 7.20% monthly. State matches 12.60% (effective 10/01/24)

Health Insurance
PEEHIP, established in 1983, provides health insurance benefits for active and retired education employees and is governed by the PEEHIP Board of Control. The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA.

  • Family (without Spouse but with dependents) $ 207
  • Employee + Spouse (no dependents) $ 282

  • Includes $100 per month spousal surcharge Note: The spousal surcharge does not apply to spouses who are independently eligible for PEEHIP.

Tobacco Usage Premium

  • Spouse $ 50
The tobacco premium applies only to the PEEHIP Hospital Medical and VIVA Health plans.
