Job Description

The College of Humanities and Department of Communication seek an experienced accounting professional with a work record of reliability and accuracy, who possesses excellent communication skills, and is accustomed to working collaboratively in a team setting. The accountant maintains and reconciles ledgers and accounts, prepares reports and financial statements.
Our office is a hybrid work environment working three days in person and two days remotely.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions
  • Prepares and assesses budget, revenue, expense, payroll and journal entries, and other accounting documents.
  • Analyzes and monitors budgets and expenditures for compliance with fiscal accountability and reporting requirements.
  • Analyzes and forecasts revenue and expenditure trends.
  • Reconciles balance sheets, cash, general ledger, payroll accounts and supporting journal entries.
  • Develops accounting systems and documents to support the input and handling of financial data and reports.
  • Interacts with internal and external auditors and participates in auditing projects.
  • Monitors and oversees faculty research accounts and provides support to faculty in purchasing, grant cost transfers, and University management report review processes.
  • Trains and assists as back-up to administrative staff in management and processing of department financial processes including: purchasing card, reimbursements, payment requests, travel, and other various university purchasing methods.
  • Completes internal transfers within the University’s system. Confirms promised revenue, transfers, and complete transactions of department financial commitments.
  • Assists in payroll accounting for faculty, graduate students, staff, and associate instructors.
  • Provides reports and recommendations to the department chair that promote and help obtain department goals.

 


Problem Solving
This position requires the ability to apply generally accepted accounting principles, federal cost accounting regulations, and University policies and procedures to a variety of situations. The incumbent must be able to interpret complex policies and effectively communicate the information in an easily understood manner. The incumbent is required to provide analysis of each situation and use professional judgment in reaching a solution. The accountant is expected to recommend changes to accounting based procedures based upon analysis performed and specialized knowledge.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field, plus one year related experience or equivalency (two years of related work experience can be substituted for one year of education) required. A thorough understanding of general ledger accounting practices, cost analysis and accounting principles, as well as demonstrated analytical, problem solving, human relations and effective communication skills also required.

Knowledge of PeopleSoft or Access databases may be preferred in some areas.

Accounting experience preferred, though applicants with administrative work experience that meet the minimum qualifications will also be considered.
