The agent in this position will provide education and leadership for the More In My Basket program in The Western Region. The agent will proactively conduct need assessments and program evaluations to determine program objectives.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension agents deliver unbiased, research-based information co Norch Carolina.

The program, More In My Basket (MIMB), is funded by a grant from USDA Food and Nutrition Services and is delivered in partnership between the Department of Agricultural and Human Sciences at NC State University and NC Cooperative Extension. This multi-county education program promotes and facilitates the delivery of outreach information and programming to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) likely eligible population in counties across North Carolina. MIMB is delivered by Cooperative Extension Family & Consumer Sciences and 4-H Youth Development Agents and Regional Outreach Facilitators.

The program, More In My Basket (MIMB), promotes and facilitates the delivery of outreach education, information, and programming to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) eligible population. A key role of the Regional Outreach Facilitator-West is to promote and facilitate the delivery of outreach information and programming to the SNAP-eligible population. You will work with Extension agents in the Family and Consumer Sciences and 4-H Youth Development programs as well as partnering agencies to coordinate and support a multi-county education program targeted to these populations. The position requires that you be self-initiating, as well as a collaborator, able to multi-task effectively in a complex educational/academic environment, and be skilled in managing its schedule of participation in events/meetings.

Duties and Responsibilities
The applicant should have demonstrated abilities in coordinating multi-county education programs and developing partnerships with organizations serving limited-resource populations. Knowledge of and preferably, experience with working with Cooperative Extension Family and Consumer Sciences and 4-H Youth Development Agents is desirable. The applicant must be able to multi-task effectively and efficiently in a complex educational/academic environment, be
comfortable with the process of collaboration, and be skilled in managing a schedule to support geographically dispersed programs and partnerships. There are regular office hours with some evening and weekend programs needed.

The ROF West is an integral part of NC Cooperative Extension and the More In My Basket program. The Regional Outreach Facilitator is housed at McDowell County Extension Center and works under the guidance and direct supervision of Molly Sandfoss, County Extension Director (CED) and Dr. Carolyn Bird, Professor and
Principle Investigator (PI).

The incumbent is expected to follow County Extension office procedures including attendance at meetings and activities as directed by the Extension Director. The incumbent will participate in More in My Basket program meetings and activities as directed by the MIMB Program Director (or designee).

Other Work/Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with and support Extension agent outreach in seven primary western counties: McDowell, Yadkin, Alleghany, Mitchell, Buncombe, Transylvania, and Cherokee.
  • Liaison with and provide the MIMB campus-based team with information on specialized needs for the region.
  • Organize and/or conduct regional agent update meetings with MIMB agents
  • Collaborate with western Extension agents, including those neighboring the primary counties, to engage with the More In My Basket Program, for example, to;
    • identify organizations serving low-resource audiences to expand partnerships
    • build and extend community relationships with organizations
    • participate in the delivery of workshop and booth outreach events
    • facilitate SNAP eligibility screening and application completion assistance through connection with campus program team
    • organize and/or conduct regional information meetings and
      outreach to neighboring counties not currently participating in MIMB

  • Serve as liaison between county program staff (Cooperative Extension Agents and CEDs) and NCSU program staff for any programmatic issues.
  • Provide day-to-day management of the ROF planned participation in outreach events.
  • Provide on-site support to county staff for outreach activities individually or in collaboration with other Program Staff
  • Facilitate program evaluation by assisting with curricula evaluation during MIMB workshops and sending completed forms to the campus team.
  • Support primary Western and surrounding counties’ outreach through the development of community partnerships and participate in community coalition and related meetings to advance program outreach venues.
  • Collaborate with the MIMB campus team to include the Outreach Strategy and Planning Manager, Program Coordinator, Communications and Social Media staff, Bilingual Outreach Facilitator, and Resource Navigator.
  • Contribute to the campus partnership database through regular reports to support relationships and ongoing communication with collaborators to facilitate outreach events.
  • Refer local clients to the campus team for FNS/SNAP benefit screenings and application completion assistance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Experience/Education

One of the following educational requirements: – A Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 overall or a 3.0 in family and consumer sciences (formerly known as home economics) or a related field (based on a 4.0 scale). The minimum GPA requirement will be waived for NCCE Program Associates with a Bachelor’s degree. – A Bachelor’s degree and the completion of at least one-half of coursework in a Master’s degree curriculum with a cumulative grade point average 3.0 or higher with at least one degree in family and consumer sciences (formerly known as home economics) or a related field, or – Completion of a Master’s degree with at least one degree in family and consumer sciences (formerly known as home economics) or a related field.

  • Also required: a personal automobile; computer literacy; strong oral and written communication skills; the ability to plan, implement, market, and evaluate educational programs; willingness to work as a team member and support a total Extension program; and the ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities. Personal Attributes: Successful performance of the duties encompassed in the County Extension Agent’s job requires that the individual possess habits of industry, a sense of responsibility, and a genuine appreciation for the worth of the individual. The employee must be adept in both oral and written communication. The County Extension Agent is eligible to become a member of the non-tenure track/special faculty at North Carolina State University. The County Extension Agent has primary responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating that phase of county Extension programs within assigned areas of program responsibility. The County Extension Agent cooperates with colleagues in the North Carolina Cooperative Extension and county leaders in performing assigned responsibilities. The performance of assigned responsibilities is governed by the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

Masters degree in a relevant field is preferred (Family and Consumer Sciences, Public Health, Sociology, Social Work, etc.), but Bachelor’s degree accepted.
