The Public Safety & Police Department are currently seeking motivated and qualified candidates for the Assistant Chief of Police position.
This position encompasses all aspects of a modern law enforcement agency including patrol, investigations, telecommunications, security, and CALEA accreditation.
Position has the primary responsibility for long and short-term planning activities. Position has full budgetary authority for analysis and planning of Department resources. The position has independent operational authority for decisions made while coordinating the separate divisions of the department and the accreditation process.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
1. This position provides direct administrative support to the Director, including assuming the administrative and command duties in the Director’s absence.
2. This position directly supervises the Division Commanders and Professional Standards Lieutenant. This position also directly supervises any employees assigned to a special project or grant funded project over which the position has authority.
3. This position is responsible for full decision making authority on behalf of the Director for all Human Resources related matters including, but not limited to; hiring, promotion, salary adjustments, position reclassification, and discipline of agency personnel.
4. This position is responsible for coordinating community relations with various stakeholders of the UNCG community to include coordination of the department’s orientation obligations to multiple groups across campus. This position serves as liaison for the Department and as the representative of the Director with a variety of agencies including other University Departments, outside law enforcement agencies, and community groups.
5. This position develops and implements special programs including the planning and assigning of responsibilities to others within the department. Special programs may include operational plans for large-scale/problematic events (dignitaries, Constitutional issues regarding free speech events/protests) special large-scale purchases, job task analyses, organizational planning, and other programs requiring special planning expertise.
6. This position is responsible for long and short term planning including the analysis of budgetary issues, crime statistic information and the formulation of Department wide goals and objectives. This position ensures that all Department goals are directly related to the goals, objectives, and educational mission of the University.
7. This position has primary responsibility for guiding department training philosophy and needs. As well as knowledge and evaluation of various law enforcement technology systems. This position has responsibility for accreditation process through the Commission on the Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies.
Minimum Qualifications
- A minimum of a bachelors degree or greater and 8 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience or an associate degree and 10 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience.
- At least 4 years of the experience requirement must have been in a supervisory role equivalent to a Police Lieutenant or greater.
- Certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible for out-of-state lateral hires.
Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates
Preferred Qualifications
- It is preferred that this position hold an advanced law enforcement certification and a general instructor certification through the North Carolina Training and Standards Commission.
- It is also preferred that the candidate have higher education experience.
